What
is “Dark Energy?” No, it is not magic or something that the Wickens invented. It
might just be the answer to a question that has baffled scientist ever since
its discovery. Why is the universe expanding at a much faster rate now, than it
ever has before?
Gravity, as proposed by Albert Einstein, would slow,
eventually stop, and then reverse until the universe collapsed upon itself. So
why is the universe speeding up in its expansion? Was Einstein wrong? Or is
there another force acting upon out universe? Scientist think they have the
answer! Or at least in some part. Dark Energy is energy created in empty space.
Since space is expanding, creating more “empty” space. This Dark Energy would
not dilute but would grow and gain power. More is unknown than is known about
Dark Energy. We know how much Dark Energy there is because we know how it
affects the universes expansion. Besides this, it is a complete mystery. About
68% of the universe is Dark Energy. Dark mater makes up about 27%, and the last
little bit, roughly 5% is normal matter; what we can physically see and
measure. If you think about it, it shouldn't be called “normal” at all, since
it is such a small fraction of the universe.
So what is causing our universe to speed up in expansion? We still are not completely sure, but Dark Energy does seem to be a pretty good explanation. Maybe the answer actually lies in the “emptiness” of space.
